Competitive selection

FIRST STAGE – FACULTY

- Students wishing to participate in academic mobility programs must submit an Application in accordance with Appendices 1 and 2 to the relevant faculty dean's office with the approval of the department head.

- Based on the students' applications, the dean's office compiles a list of students. Students must pass the initial competitive selection at the faculty level.

List of documents for participation in the initial competitive selection (at the faculty):

1) Student application (with the approval of the department head and dean, Appendices 1, 2);

2) Copy of the passport of a citizen of the Republic of Kazakhstan;

3) Copy of the identity card;

4) Educational documents: transcript of current academic performance certified by the University seal;

5) Recommendation letters from the faculty dean and the department head;

6) Motivation letter (in the language of instruction at the foreign university);

7) Copies of certificates, diplomas, awards, and letters of appreciation, if available;

8) Document confirming knowledge of a foreign language (IELTS, TOEFL), if available;

9) Photo 3x4 (2 pieces);

10) File folder (blue).

- The faculty independently conducts the initial selection of candidates based on academic performance (GPA of 3.00 and above on the transcript) and the student's activity in the educational and scientific life of the university, availability of certificates for the relevant educational program, and knowledge of foreign languages (see list of documents).

- The package of documents (including the original application for the competition) after the initial selection of students who have passed according to the faculty's decision is submitted to the International Cooperation Department (ICD).

- The dean's office sends the documents to the International Cooperation Department (ICD) with a cover memo recommending the specified students for participation in the second stage of the competitive selection for studying at a foreign university.

SECOND STAGE– International Cooperation Department (ICD)
- The International Cooperation Department (ICD) organizes the work of the commission for conducting the competition among students. The composition of the competition commission and the deadlines for the competitive selection are approved by a presidential order. A copy of the order is kept in the International Cooperation Department (ICD).
- The main criteria for the competitive selection are: completion of one academic period at the home university, academic performance of "A", "A-", "B+", "B", "B-" (GPA 3.00 and above, with no "FX" grades on the transcript), proficiency in a foreign language (preferably with a certificate of passing the IELTS or TOEFL test at B2 level or higher) if studying in a foreign language, as well as achievements in the field of scientific activity.
- In the case of studying at a foreign university in English, all candidates are required to take an English language proficiency exam in the IELTS format (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking). The exam dates are determined in advance and communicated to all candidates at least 2 weeks prior to the exam date, through personal notification and posting information on social media.
- The results of the exam are documented in the minutes of the commission meeting and published on the university's website.
- A mandatory step in the competitive selection process is the completion of a special psychological test at the ABU Mental Health Center. The results of the test are sent to the International Cooperation Department (ICD) and attached to the application for participation in the competition.
- The university's Mental Health Center organizes the administration of this test among candidates after the foreign language exam, or, in the case of participating in the competition without an English/Turkish language exam, immediately after submitting documents for the competition to the International Cooperation Department (ICD).
- The date of the test at the Mental Health Center is determined by the head of the Center in coordination with the Vice-Rector for International Cooperation.
- Based on the results of the foreign language exam and the psychological test, a final selection of students for academic mobility programs to foreign universities is conducted.
- The decision of the competition commission is formalized in the corresponding protocol.

COORDINATION OF CURRICULA (DEPARTMENT), RECEIVING AN INVITATION FROM A FOREIGN UNIVERSITY (INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION DEPARTMENT)
- The coordination of the curricula of the foreign university and ours, as well as the development of an individual study plan for the student going abroad for studies, is carried out by the department advisor. This is formalized through a memo signed by the head of the department and the advisor, which includes information on the comparison of subjects, the number of hours, determines the academic differences, and lists the subjects to be offered in distance learning (hereinafter referred to as DL).
- The student submits an application for DL with the signatures of the head of the department, the dean, the vice-rector for academic affairs, and the vice-rector for international cooperation to the International Cooperation Department (ICD).
- After the curricula are coordinated, the ICD sends letters to foreign universities to arrange invitations for students to study. Copies of the invitations are sent to the deans.
- The ICD prepares a general memo addressed to the President of the university to issue an order for students to study at a foreign university, indicating information about the list of courses offered in DL, as well as considering attendance in the distance format of military training (if necessary). Copies of the invitations are attached to the memo, specifying the exact dates of the study period.
