The history of the university begins in 1998.
In 2021, based on the decision of the sole founder dated 26.08.2021, the Kazakh Humanitarian Law Innovative University was renamed into Alikhan Bokeikhan University. On September 8, 2021, a certificate of re-registration of the Kazakh Humanitarian Law Innovative University into Alikhan Bokeikhan University was received.

The mission of the University is to make a positive contribution to the educational, research, socio-cultural development of the region by providing high-quality academic programs aimed at developing professional skills that promote employment.
The university's vision is to strive to become a socially responsible university recognized by the professional community, creating conditions for increased employment opportunities and contributing to the economic growth of the region.
The main objective of the strategic development of the university is a comprehensive training of competitive specialists, capable of working in the conditions of Kazakhstan's integration into the world community.
Alikhan Bokeikhan University (ABU) is the largest multi-profile educational institution in the region, which provides training on state educational grants and on a contractual basis in the state and Russian languages on 32 bachelor programs, 20 master programs, 6 doctoral programs (PhD).
ABU is a signatory to the Great Charter of Universities (September 15-17, 2010, Bologna, Italy).

The university has three faculties (law, humanities, information technology and economics) and nine departments.
For the development of active citizenship, the formation of leadership qualities, for personal growth and self-fulfillment of students there are 8 student organizations: Creative Group "Urker", the youth wing "Zhas Otan", "Student Alliance of ABU", Public Foundation "Commonwealth of young lawyers", "KVN Union of ABU", debate club "Asyl Arna", charity organization "Ak niet", the team "Enactus ABU".
The University has a modern educational and material base, located in 11 buildings, with a total area of 22363.7 square meters.
The University has its own well-equipped dormitory "Student House" under ownership rights.
A military department of the university was created on August 27, 2011 (by the Decree of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan № 977), which is located in an isolated area of 1.36 hectares.
ABU is accredited as a subject of scientific and scientific-technical activity.
